Flora Calcarea chalk and Channel Way
Flora Calcarea is a collection of artworks created by the
artist Rob Kesseler for the Chalk and Channel Way between
Dover and Folkestone, which invites you to take a closer
look at the landscape and the rich botanical diversity
around us. The inspiration for this work was the thousands
of pressed dried plants in the herbarium at Kew Gardens.
The artist presents us with a fossilised book of dried flowers
from which the pages have escaped, blown along the path,
accompanied by highly magnified pollen specimens
collected from local flowers and photographed on a
scanning electron microscope at Kew.

The Chalk & Channel Way is part of
the National Cycle Network, route 2,
and artworks along the path have
been commissioned by a partnership
of Sustrans, the Countryside Agency
White Cliffs Countryside Project,
Kent Downs AONB, Eurotunnel
Arts Council England SE, Arts and
Business, Dover District Council and
Shepway District Council.
