Behind this bench stood the magnificent neo-gothic red brick
building of St Paul's School from 1884 to 1968.
Celebrated Architect: Alfred Waterhouse
Boys were evacuated in WW2 and it became the HQ for 21st Army Group
commanded by former pupil General Montgomery.
The final decision to invade Normandy was taken here on 15th May 1944,
about which President Eisenhower wrote:
"During the whole of the war I attended no other
conference so packed with rank as this one."
King George VI, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Generals Montgomery
and Eisenhower were amongst 146 present in the Lecture Theatre.
