  9. Ruth M. Goldbloom, O.C., O.N.S. (1923-2012) Born in Cape Breton to Jewish immigrant parents who had fled Czarist Russia, Ruth Goldbloom was a legendary community volunteer, leader and fundraiser. When she learned that Pler 21, then a shed on Halifax's waterfront, had been the landing site for almost 1,000,000 immigrants to Canada between 1928-1971, she saw a unique opportunity Committed to celebrating the journeys and contributions of immigrants past, present and future to the multicultural fabric of Canada, she embarked on a campaign to restore and commemorate this site As Chair of the Pier 21 Society, she mustered her characteristie passion and enthusiasm to spearhead a Canada-wide campaign ultimately raising millions of dollars to restore and transform the site into Canada's National Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. Ten years later, it became Canada's sixth national museum.
